The final stage of the repairs to the waterfront, the beach push-up using soft materials, has been completed at the end of June. The work was again carried out by local contractor Perry Baker with Russell resident Bram Cone supervising the work.

This final part of the project was to move the soft shingle material from the lower part of the beach and place it at the top of the beach to cover the low rock revetment and eroded areas providing a soft solution that could be sacrificed in the event of heavy weather that would diffuse the wave action with soft materials. This work requires a resource consent, and Far North Holdings have been granted a 10-year consent to do up to two beach push-ups per year.

It’s hoped this, along with the two areas of rock revetments will protect our heritage waterfront from eroding further.

This work completes the urgent repairs to stabilse the waterfront between Butterfish and the Town Hall and will be monitored how it performs under severe weather events.
