Safely back at last

The much-loved pontoon moored off the waterfront in Kororāreka Bay is finally back after a fairly lengthy absence over winter. Generously reinstated by the team at Johnson Brothers, and Moorings Northland in time for last Christmas, it developed a distinct list over January as it slowly filled up with water. Most of us were watching its gradual slide into the briny and by the beginning of February, local Tracey Morris messaged the Trust to say it was fully underwater.

This time, the actual pontoon itself needed replacing but as the Johnson brothers had replaced the ladder previously they wanted to salvage as much of the stainless steel from the old pontoon as possible. However, with everything that needed doing, the cost of work was quite substantial, so in stepped the Davey family to chip in with some of the expenses.

Pontoon back for summer

Many thanks to all those involved in getting the community pontoon back on its mooring in time for Christmas. The Wharf Trust’s grateful thanks go to the Davey family, the Johnson Brothers and of course Moorings Northland. Thanks to a team effort, our local kids, and of course our visitors, have a new pontoon for Christmas!
