Far North Holdings issued a tender for suppliers to repair the waterfront areas where the erosion was most significant, namely the area by the cannon in front of the Town Hall along with the area just past Butterfish opposite Max Kiwi. After their engineers reviewed the various designs proposed, they selected a solution proposed by local Bram Cone, which proposed a layer of rocks to fill the two areas which had been severely eroded, providing a solid base. These to then be covered with soil to restore the natural angle of the beach and then grassed to restore the natural shoreline.

The team involved were Perry Baker, Bram Cone and his brother Chris, along with Char Ebbett who assisted with the traffic management plan. Bram, Chris and Char generously donated their time, ensuring that the project could be achieved within the budget secured by the Far North District Council.

The work was completed over a couple of days and everyone agrees that the waterfront looks fantastic in the previously damaged areas. The final stage, 1C is to carry out a beach push up, using shingle from the beach. This will sit in front of the repairs and provide a sacrificial wave break to absorb waves and distribute their energy, minimising their impact on the actual shoreline. The beach push-up component requires an additional Resource Consent from the Northland Regional Council but this will allow multiple push-ups over a 10 year period.

A huge thanks to Dave Gwillam DSS Security Solutions for taking the awesome drone footage of the project while it was underway.
